4th International Conference on “Mathematical

Methods and Models in Fluid Mechanics”

July 7-9, 2008

Announcement

Fluid Mechanics is one of the most important discipline and highly developed branch of science that has been the subject of continuous and expanding research since about 1840. The subject has tremendous applications in almost all branches of science and engineering including environmental and the biological sciences. It is equally important in oceanography, meteorology, glaciology, study of blood flow, gliding motility of bacteria, heat and mass transfer, aerodynamics etc.

The conference focuses on different aspects of theoretical and Computational Fluid Mechanics. Mathematical modeling of the fluids and the boundary value problems are important from application view point in polymer industry. The latest trends and research will be presented in this important area of Fluid Mechanics. The stability analysis of the flow problems in non-Newtonian fluids is important for understanding the fluids and will be an important topic of presentations in the conference. The governing equations of the Fluid Mechanics are highly non-linear and most of the times are not amenable to analytic solutions. Due to this special emphasis is given on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The application of CFD ranges from aerodynamics, mass and heat transfer to convective diffusion.

An investigation of boundary layer flows due to stretching sheets is also current area in modern fluid mechanics. Such flow problems have considerable practical relevance in electrochemistry, polymer processing and in fiber industries etc. The latest trends in this field will be presented. Homotopy Analysis Method has become very popular in recent years to solve nonlinear differential equations. Unlike other perturbation methods this does not require a small parameter condition and provides a convenient way to control the approximate series. The method and its applications to non-Newtonian fluid mechanics will be focused in the conference.

Convection is one of the major modes of heat transfer and mass transfer which has tremendous applications in engineering and industry. The convective heat transfer problem due to heated or cooled vertical flat plate provides one of the most basic scenarios for heat transfer theory and thus is of considerable theoretical and practical interest. Therefore thermodynamic considerations will have a major area of attention in the conference.

The blood flow, gliding motility of bacteria and stenosis can be modeled as non-Newtonian fluids which have become increasingly interesting from application points of view in bio-mechanics. This conference has a great stress on problems in bio-mechanics.

Fluid transport in biological organs is usually considered to be due to the contraction and expansion of walls which produces the effect of physiological pumps. In order to understand this complex phenomena of fluid flow of different kind, the flow problem in a deformable channel are of great importance which would be deliberated at length in the conference proceedings.

Besides all this, the major objective of the conference has been the development and encouragement of academic collaboration, academic global fraternity, human resource development, cross fertilization of ideas and to work jointly for a better future of the mankind.

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Islamabad, an emerging IT university in Pakistan, is organizing the conference. This is the fourth International Conference in Fluid Mechanics.
